GRASSOMANIA 7

Grassomania Festival is an artistic event aiming to present modern art in various city spaces. The starting point for its organizers is the works of Günter Grass after whom Günter Grass Gallery in Gdańsk, a part of the Gdańsk City Gallery, was named.

Grassomania 7
Date: 7-11 October 2015

The seventh edition of a popular festival Grassomania (a project dedicated to Günter Grass, whose programme is based on the works of the Nobelist interpreted and adapted by young generations of artists) will be focused around film adaptations of literature. Such a topic was chosen on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the film The Call of the Toad (Unkenrufe) that is based on a Günter Grass novel with the same title. Film screenings, as well as meetings with artists and researchers in the form of lectures conducted beforehand, will be held in a legendary studio cinema Watra Syrena (currently closed for a wider audience and opened exclusively for the festival). In this very cinema selected scenes of The Call of the Toad were recorded 10 years ago.

The main goal of the screenings is to promote cultural phenomena by integrating individual art disciplines in an interesting and atypical for an art gallery project. By including in the art dialogue the youngest muse, which is film, we wish to reveal its artistic aspects that are not known or obvious for a wider audience of the popular cinema; aspects that served as a basis for creating a number of marvellous interpretations and film adaptations of the literary works. The relation of moving image and speech will additionally be commented by experts and artists invited to the project. The Grassomania festival will serve as a summary of literary visits to the gallery in a form of 3D visualizations of written word. We believe that the selection of attractive film adaptations of literary works referred to within the exhibitions presented in the gallery, will encourage the audience to reach for their original book editions.

Additionally, as part of the Festival, a Finnish artist Leevi Lehtinen will present his site-specific multimedia installation called “Mortal Sin” inside the Günter Grass Gallery in Gdańsk. Owned by the Finnish State Art CollectionThe installation is realized as part of the Creative Europe project – The People's Smart Sculpture.
