Gdańsk Biennial of Art 2014

For the third time the Gdańsk Biennial of Art has gathered the most interesting works by Pomeranian artists. The concept behind the display was to capture and showcase the prevailing trends achieved by a variety of techniques and by different generations of artists. The Biennial is a polyphonic utterance about present-day directions in art voiced by those, who are either already recognized and appreciated (known from previous GBS editions), just debuting or, whose creations have so far remained in the seclusion of their private studios. The formula of the competition leaves the choice of form and content free and thus around one hundred professional artists responded to the call – the exhibition will show their most valued works. Some of them are aesthetic, others – quite the contrary, some are witty, contrary or cruel due to the directness of their message; with so many individualities, the range is wide. As in other group exhibitions, this one is eclectic and does not lead the viewer into the coherence of representation but is ruled by the dynamics of autonomy.

The event is a cyclic presentation of the Gdańsk City Gallery. In addition to a transaction display, it aims to prompt and integrate the cultural milieu of Pomerania. The exhibited works have been selected in a competition, and in subsequent stages they will be granted awards: nominated by the public, from the Academy of Fine Arts and the grand prix – the solo exhibition of the winning artist in the following year.
