The thematic field of the „Metropolitanka” exhibition is vast, just as the understanding of concern, care and strength but also exclusion, dependence or fear. Works on display reflect the experience of a world usually arranged according to a hierarchical, binary, black-and-white order. Challenging this scheme requires courage and tools. That is why we look at relationships: both the supportive ones and those where abuse occurs. We ask the eternal question: how to be safe? How do we manage our own expectations and the expectations of others? And how much does it cost? The aim is not to present the answer but to deal with the question itself. The resulting narratives are diverse, testifying to sensitivity and vigilance, to the search for community and acceptance. They prove a deep awareness of the need for change.

Metropolitanka is a visual-art project that has been carried out since 2012 by the Intermedia faculty of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk and the Metropolitanka Social Group operating by the City Culture Institute (IKM) in Gdańsk. Initially, IKM carried out a community project that focused on herstories related to the Gdańsk Shipyard. In the years 2012-2019, this project was part of the Introduction to Intermedia programme led by Prof. Dr hab. Bogna Burska; from 2020 onwards, it is carried out in collaboration between the first-grade Intermedia studios. The current exhibition consists of works by the students participating in the project in 2023 and 2024, as well as by the presenters of this year’s edition: Dr Martyna Jastrzębska and Zuzanna Malinowska, Dr Anka Leśniak Dr Anna Włodarska-Zamiara; the posters on display were created under the supervision of Dr hab. Ania Witkowska.
