The second part of the\u00a0Friends from the Seaside\u00a0exhibition mostly consists of\u00a0works from a brief plein-air that took place in the first week of August 2015.\u00a0The meeting of the Friends took place in the margin of the cultural changes\u00a0and institutional reorganisations of the Gda\u0144sk City Gallery. The beginning\u00a0of August was also when the long-standing mentor of the Friends, Prof.\u00a0Witos\u0142aw Czerwonka passed away. Therefore a sense of dolefulness and\u00a0emptiness filled the plein-air and the in-between space was heavy with\u00a0endless talk and recollections of the student years. Simultaneously, Poland\u00a0entered into a dispute over the allocation of the immigrants steadily\u00a0flooding into the EU from Syria and North Africa. Greece was also at the\u00a0centre of attention, with a subsequent bailout from the EU targeted at\u00a0Grexit avoidance. Lastly, a new Polish President, who embodies political\u00a0change in the country, was sworn in. So, last August was not only a time of\u00a0tropical heat, summertime leisure and light-hearted ambience. Quite the\u00a0contrary.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

As the years went by, relationships among the Friends have undergone\u00a0certain changes and have crumbled slightly. The plein-air was more than\u00a0just another form of collective socializing, it proved instead that the Friends\u00a0do not distance themselves from an outer world or confront only within the\u00a0inner circle of their artistic attitudes. Few of them kept on painting and\u00a0drawing; conversations were unfolding at the Mot\u0142awa riverside, there was\u00a0a shared breakfast, and a few gigs by the Nagrobki group (Adam Witkowski+ Maciej Salamon). A number of spouses, children and dogs turned up as\u00a0well.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the end, two different exhibitions are on display in two different\u00a0galleries. The show at the GGM2 in Powro\u017anicza Street displays a brief\u00a0poetic narration about summertime, leisure and the inner and outer\u00a0landscape. It also abounds with traveller\u2019s notes and escapes from the daily\u00a0routine. Thus the display attempts to look away from the current economic\u00a0or geopolitical problems. The display at the GGM1 in Piwna Street, on the\u00a0other hand, rings with definitely critical tones and directly addresses\u00a0political and economic strategies together with their ruthlessness and\u00a0consistency.<\/p>\n

Once again, the Friends from the Seaside exhibition is composed of\u00a0diversified elements, personalities and artistic merits, which often resist\u00a0clear-cut definition and parallels. And even if the artists get together just for\u00a0a moment and on an irregular basis, the group\u2019s implicit definition lingers\u00a0in its simplicity, openness and casual nature.<\/p>\n
