Late this year, an exhibition of photographs from the Institute of National Remembrance will be on display at the Gda\u0144sk City Gallery 2. \u201cThe Archive of the Institute of National Remembrance holds nearly 40 million photographs: portraits, landscapes, still lifes, street scenes, aerial photographs, reportage photographs, scientific photographs, family photographs and many more. There are also images of death\u201d, writes Tomasz Stempowski in his exhibition text. A very capacious resource, this archive contains photographs depicting both matters crucial to Polish history and evidence of the banality of human actions, petty crimes or acts of insubordination. Their common denominator is violence \u2013 expressed through the image of a human corpse or a sexual intercourse under the unblinking gaze of a regime agent.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

From the perspective of the apparatus of oppression, each single detail is interesting and relevant. Nothing is insignificant enough to be overlooked. As always when it comes to memory, one encounters what is repressed and inconvenient, too. This is why silence is such a vital clue. After all, what stays undocumented can pose a threat.<\/p>

What is the regime looking at? What is it interested in? How does this looking reveal the regime self?<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

This exhibition is another attempt to ask questions about history, memory and our past.<\/p>

The book \u201cHOW TO LOOK NATURAL IN PHOTOS\u201d by Beata Bartecka and \u0141ukasz Rusznica is part of the exhibition.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

In his artistic work, \u0141ukasz Rusznica (1980), a photographer and curator, focuses primarily on the photographic book. He runs the MpM14 gallery in Wroc\u0142aw.<\/p>

Tomasz Stempowski (1971), a historian and an archivist in the Institute of National Remembrance, author and co-author of articles and book publications, including: Piaszczyste drogi karpatczyk\u00f3w.
