Many a times would Günter Grass mention the time of his childhood spent in the pre-war Danzig, searching for the tracks of his identity in the post-war Gdansk using his senses. Walking through the city with Grass’s protagonists or Grass himself, we hear the call of approaching seagulls, a clatter of a passing tram, a religious song coming from inside of thick gothic church walls, chimes from the town-hall tower, we smell the mustiness of Gdansk basements or of the Radunia canal, we feel the heat of old bricks scorched by numerous fires. Particular places or situations trigger specific sensual memories, such as the taste of fizz powder on a tongue repeatedly evoked by Grass as a the symbol of his childhood. They form a multi-sensual experience of both the history and the present of the place we live in. Thus, with the sensation of the fizz powder on our tongues, we enter the city to feel,  absorb, understand and learn it anew.<\/p>\n
