In March 2022, another edition of Mars Colony Hackathon takes place. The workshop is organised by the US Embassy, European Space Foundation and Polish Space Agency for the purpose of designing Martian city states. Karolina Wojtas and Maciek Cholewa, two Polish artists and cosmic dilettantes, fill in the application forms. Only one of them is admitted to the workshop, which he eventually leaves declaring to be simply \u201cpissed off\u201d. Cholewa writes to me and to Karolina: \u201cEven if someone manages to persuade me that these advanced Martian studies and the colony are needed, the inevitable question to be asked when designing all this and subjecting it to futurological reflexion is: why bring our existing world into it?\u201d<\/i><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The duo of Karolina Wojtas and Maciek Cholewa is a team of self-proclaimed astronauts, formed naturally when the pair was developing the exhibition concept. The fairy tale image of the artists is magnified by their muscular hairy-patterned suits and spherical lampshades casually worn over their heads, with a plethora of galactic garbage in their hands. We see the falling stars and nosediving drones, the Bing Bang of fireworks and the cosmic ejaculation on Cholewa\u2019s bald head. The artists, like photojournalists, follow their own history of an attempted space conquest. Left alone in the alien planet or returning to the Earth, they are suspended in between like road literature protagonists. They are climbing somewhere, looking for something, studying something and going into an unknown direction. In the Colonies<\/i>, the world of the planet is the reality of the abandoned Polish land contrasted with visions of romanticised space conquests; it\u2019s a sandpit made from post-mining heaps in Silesia and a temporary base located in a deserted newsagent\u2019s shop. There is no place for large-budget productions here: after all, this art is funded by public subsidies rather than private capital.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cSpace expeditions constituted the hitherto unknown and the most expensive of all possible desertions from the area of historical transformations\u201d<\/i>, says Starck in an anti-astronaut tirade in Stanis\u0142aw Lem\u2019s Return from the Stars<\/i>. Escape into space is hardly anything more than serfdom in progress and an attempt to find the extra-terrestrial setting for the systems that are currently destroying our world: the systems based on capitalist exploitation and abuse. No wonder that individual astronomers raise the issue of space study ethics, as exemplified by the Just Space Alliance, an initiative advocating a more inclusive and ethical extra-terrestrial future.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Colonies<\/i> tell a history that must end with death to let other lives continue. Catastrophic thinking is encouraged; here, it takes the form of wishful thoughts written on a postcard from space.<\/p>

Karolina Wojtas<\/b> (born 1996) is a photographer and graduate of the Film School in \u0141\u00f3d\u017a, Poland, and the Institute of Creative Photography Film School in Opava, Czech Republic. She lives in the colourful world of experimentation and never-ending fun. She draws ideas from children\u2019s fantasies and memories, and can be equally inspired by her grandpa\u2019s messy garden and a big ice rink. It is hard to slip through her exhibitions as they often abound in glitter and balloons: they make the viewer feel like a child again with an urge to play, toss around things or scribble. During the summer of 2019, she opened her own museum in her home village in the Podkarpackie region.<\/p>

Maciek Cholewa <\/b>(born 1991) is a visual artist and graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Katowice. He is represented by the Szara Gallery. He works with objects, graphics, photography and video. His works focus on topics related to periphery, city, local community and visual interpretation of cultural texts. Cholewa\u2019s narrations are based on processing of word-of mouth stories and contexts. He lives in a small town, which he treats as an important source of reference and inspiration. He runs the Instagram profile Pozdrowienia z ma\u0142ego miasta<\/i> (Greetings from a Small Town).<\/p>

Daria Grabowska (born 1993) is first and foremost a dice maker and backseat gamer, occasionally doubling as a curator and art critic. A graduate from the University of the Arts in Pozna\u0144, she writes for the SZUM<\/i> Magazine and Zeszyty Artystyczne<\/i>. She was one of the two organisers of the national conference on the current condition of art criticism in Poland (with Paulina Breli\u0144ska,\u00a0#StanKrytyczny, 2016). Author of the MA thesis on changes of Polish art criticism after 1989 (Gdzie macie swoich krytyk\u00f3w?<\/i>, 2018). Originator and organiser of the Tekken Art Tournament (with Piotr Policht and Janek\u00a0Owczarek, 2019). During a more boring period of her life (2017 \u2013 2022), she worked as a full-time curator and coordinator, and the programming department manager at TRAFO Centre for Contemporary Art in Szczecin.\u00a0She lives and works in B\u0142aszki, one of the smaller towns in Poland.<\/p>
